The National Native American Veterans Memorial

Later this month, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian will break ground for the National Native American Veterans Memorial. The Memorial will recognize the enduring and distinguished service of Native Americans in every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. A Historic Acquisition

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will acquire a significant portion of the archive of the Johnson Publishing Company, the publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines. The archive includes more than four million prints, negatives, and media that explored, celebrated and documented African American life from the 1940s and into the 21st century. When Karl Met Karoline

Karl, an Abyssinian ground hornbill at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, had a broken beak restored with the help of veterinarians, an exhibit specialist, a hornbill skeleton and a 3-D printer. With his natural behaviors – and confidence! – restored, he even has the chance to bond with another bird: a female hornbill named Karoline!

A Stellar Stream, the Milky Way and Dark Substructure

Scientists at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian have observed what may be evidence of dark matter interfering with a stellar stream in the Milky Way galaxy. Normally, stellar streams are long, thin and regular – but the streams in the above photo have gap and spur features, which could be the result of the stream encountering a dense, massive object – like dark matter.

New Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Shows Rarely Seen Photos of Billie Holiday

From the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, "Billie Holiday at Sugar Hill: Photographs by Jerry Dantzic" begins its national tour at Smithsonian Affiliate museums. The Irving Arts Center in Irving, Texas will launch the tour in September and then it travels in January to the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, Florida. The exhibition presents 56 remarkable images of the jazz icon by photographer Jerry Dantzic during a week long run of performances at the Newark, New Jersey, nightclub Sugar Hill.
