When Karl Met Karoline
Karl, an Abyssinian ground hornbill at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, had a broken beak restored with the help of veterinarians, an exhibit specialist, a hornbill skeleton and a 3-D printer. With his natural behaviors – and confidence! – restored, he even has the chance to bond with another bird: a female hornbill named Karoline!

A Stellar Stream, the Milky Way and Dark Substructure
Scientists at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian have observed what may be evidence of dark matter interfering with a stellar stream in the Milky Way galaxy. Normally, stellar streams are long, thin and regular – but the streams in the above photo have gap and spur features, which could be the result of the stream encountering a dense, massive object – like dark matter.

Letters Home: World War I Correspondence
Letters and postcards sent by United States military personnel during World War I are unique sources of information about their training, why they served, and their experience of war. Each letter and postcard show details about military service that cannot be found elsewhere, and even the smallest detail in a letter or postcard can be a treasure for a descendant learning about someone in their family.
