Members only behind-the-scenes tours

A group of Members had a rare glimpse of what happens in the Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) labs. Dr Sandy Ingleby and Amanda Hay walked and talked Members through the Mammalogy and Icththyology collections respectively, earlier this month.

Members heard what really goes into a day’s work in the labs and saw some fascinating specimens up close that have never been on public display - including the baby Great White Shark and the Goblin Shark.

It was fabulous to experience behind the scenes for the first time and to gain some insights into the complex world of collecting and preserving specimens, that we never see when visiting exhibitions.” Suzanne - AM Member.

Marine Invertebrate & Malacalogy tours were also conducted this month with Dr Steven Keable and Dr Mandy Reid. Two more tours will be announced. Stay tuned.

If your membership is soon to expire, renew your 1 year membership and we will extend your membership until 31 August 2021 at no extra cost. For 2 year memberships, we will extend it to 31 August 2022.

2019 Eureka Prizes winners announced

Last month, more than 600 guests attended the 2019 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Award Dinner to celebrate excellence in Australian science.

Seventeen awards were presented to the nation’s leading scientists for work across a broad range of areas that included environmental research, innovative technologies, national security and, for the first time, STEM Inclusion.

Winners included Finn Thomas from St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Concord, taking out this year's University of Sydney Sleek Geek Science Eureka Prize. With his film, Can We Bring Dinosaurs Back to Life?, Finn questioned what life would be like today if a dinosaur species were to be resurrected.
